Each leather jacket that enters our workshop is seen independent of its original cost or the cost we have obtained it for: it is seen purely in the light of its quality, unique nature and quantity. The jacket is then stripped and analysed for its potential use. Taking extra time and care at the beginning of the design process results in minimal waste during the production phase.
The biggest obstacle in this process of production is to provide consistency to the client. The way we have tackled this is to offer a ranges of styles with flexible elements but consistent patterns and sizing. Each finished piece is then priced individually, based on our standard price range for each style. The five elements of design involved in deciding where the piece sits on this pricing scale are: labour, quality and quantity, difficulty of design, function and detail. Each style, for example a vest or a glove, has various options for design. As the design process is almost always direct - i.e. the client communicates directly with the designer and artisan - the client has much room for choice, aesthetic desires and personal budget restraints. Organic process|designer, creative director and artisan|Inspired heavily by the transformative nature of all bodies of energy. Design lines often draw from the insect world, but are always a collision of time, movement, iconic realities and subtle statements.|||Following Kat Ashworth's two-year stint working alongside Cindee Smith at Melbourne Design and Fashion Incubator, the designer began developing the Citizens of Elysium label. Her desire to design and create with the absence of machinery led her to develop a strong relationship with old leather jackets. This marrying of concept and process evolved into the label's niche product, vests.
After three years of creating custom vests and other styles for individuals from all walks of life, the label and Kat's design skills have gained a cult- like following world wide, particularly within creative networks. Kat's initial vision of growing the label and meeting demand included hand-picking female artists from around Melbourne and training them in the developed design process, imparting constant direction and nurturing to each artist. The nature of leather is that it may stretch or darken in colour over time. Leather may stretch out of its original shape if there is any unusual stress placed on it, for example when the garment is worn by a larger person than that for whom it was made. The client understands that it is their responsibility to minimise the stretch of their garment. Cleaning of the garment is also the responsibility of the client. All COE leather products are to be cleaned by hand with a damp cloth. We recommend that leather conditioner be used over time to keep the leather in ultimate condition. COE will not accept the return of items for cleaning. WARRANTY:
COE aims to create highly durable items by using tried and tested methods of construction. We maintain commitment to repair COE items to ensure their longevity. COE will repair any faults or wear to our manufacturing processes free of charge. COE will happily accept paid repairs to an item if we deem that the item has been damaged beyond general wear and tear. The cost of repair will be negotiated with the client prior to the commencement of repairs. Outdated trend garments; which as a material are in nearly new condition. Varied industry waste of new resources. Salvaged, found and donated materials. Fastenings are all purchased as a new resource from local companies; known for their commitment to ethical manufacture.
PRODUCTION
Tailored by hand; based on our selection of pattern guides. Our method of sculpting the leather and fastening it with eyelets, studs and waxed thread allows for us to use hand tools, a hammer and needle to create. Machines are used only for the finishing of fabric. Our aim is to achieve a balance between quality and ethical production.
ARTISTS
Artists work on a commission basis; as independent contractors. This creates space for a flexible and self-rewarding work environment. The workshop is a shared environment where all artists work constantly different projects. This space acts as a mixing pot for an accelerated exploration of creative expression and action.
CLIENT
COE artists recognize the unique requirements of each client and our intention is to clearly and openly explore these at the beginning of a project. The nature of our supply chain means that we can truly commit to never replicate a design. Please click the ORDER link for more information.
MARKETING
COE makes a commitment to develop all marketing material and strategies with minimal waste. All our labels and swing tags are made with stamps on salvaged brown card and leather. All printed advertising is on recycled paper, but avoided wherever possible. Our focus is on direct and Internet sales so as to minimize carbon footprint. The business of COE has been developed around the concept of clear simple and visual systems that can be utilized as a way of documenting communication for all members of the team.
